Overcoming career challenges in the interest of design with Jamie Maunder

Image
The key to art lies within its subjective nature. Take the age old saying, for instance, that beauty lies in the eye of the beholder. A single image has the power to invoke entirely different emotions from any number of individuals. For this reason, art will never please everyone and for an artist like Jamie Maunder, this has been a career-long challenge. A challenge, however, that he has embraced with an open mind and a will to address wherever possible. He has an unprecedented resilience and in the field of design, this ability could not be rarer. It is with this resilience that he manages to take himself outside of his work and his own personal biases in order to craft designs that please his clients and keep them coming back for more. “The main challenge in my design career has been trying to please everyone. There are always going to be people who love your designs, but there will also always be people who don’t. It took me a long time to accept that reality. If we all li...

Interview With Artist Billy Ma, The Creative Genius Behind Booda Brand

Image
Billy Ma is a painter, sculptor, designer and illustrator. He was born in Taiwan but raised in Canada. 2009 saw Billy growing restless with his job as an art director in innovation and so he began to flex his artistic skills via digital illustrations during his spare time. With the popularity of the first images on social media and enquiries from interested buyers, Booda Brand - the limited-edition print company - was conceived. Drawing from contemporary themes, Billy seamlessly and naturally combines eastern and western aesthetics into his artwork. Many influences come from spirituality, socio-political issues and a sardonic sense of humour. Billy now stands by a set of principles to guide Booda Brand artwork: • The art must be beautifully crafted. Too often we see artists who can barely draw a stick figure. • The art must have an inspirational idea and/or soul. Do we need another variation on a portrait of Marilyn Monroe? • The printing and the materials must be museum quality...

Actress Aida King uses her craft to educate on society’s toughest topics

Image
Aida King is more than simply an actress, she is a storyteller. She makes sure to research every character she is going to portray, knowing that it is not enough to simply read the lines of a script; she has to become someone else, just for a moment, and turn someone who simply exists on the pages of a script into a real person. If she doesn’t know their backstory, she creates one, discovering similarities between herself and her character and key differences. “While I would not describe myself as a method actor, I can say that I truly immerse myself into the character at that moment while filming. Since I have a music background, I apply my method of how I used to prepare for playing music towards acting. I have a part in storytelling, so I ask myself, how do I want to say my part? What do I want the audience to feel?” King described. Such an approach has garnered King a distinguished reputation as an actress in Canada’s film and television scene. She has worked on celebr...
