Interview with filmmaker Roberta Cantow

Image
Roberta Cantow is a longtime filmmaker with a body of work that includes: Accordions Rising (2015) ; Not a Still Life (2013) ; Bloodtime Moontime Dreamtime: Women Bringing Forth Change (a Trilogy) and Clotheslines , 1982, Emmy Award winning 30-minute documentary. We have conducted an interview with her. How did you develop this style of filmmaking? How did you make your films personal and also poetic? What do you incorporate into your films/scripts? The first film that I "fell in love with" was Fellini's La Strada, different in so many ways than any film I had seen before. Even though it is considered to be in the category of 'neo-realist,' it is intensely poetic visually, even in terms of the characters who take on mythic proportions. I found that I was drawn to European cinema in general, the anti-thesis of Hollywood at the time. So the development of my "poetic" style was the product of all that interested me at the time including travel, ...

She received her BFA in Illustration from Syracuse University and her MA in Instructional Technology & Media from Teachers College, Columbia University. We have conducted an interview with her. When was the first time that you figured that your creative works of art were mostly inspired by your travels? There was no one moment when I figured this out. I have always taken photos of my travels but it was during my 2015 trips that I got more focused and wanted to tell a visual story . The real euphony came in Italy and Egypt in 2016. While I took an insane amount of photos that could stand on their own, I knew I needed to get back to my old school way of creating something. I needed to get back to painting and drawing or whatever came to me. I needed to express not only what I was seeing in front of me but what I was feeling while letting happy creati...

Mr. Jack: A New York Story - a Greek Tragedy

Image
Mick Lexington is a writer who switched from wanting to write books to writing for streaming media. He has a TV series in development, and he is working on an indie film script that will be funded through both traditional fundraising and crowdfunding. We have conducted an interview with Mick. How did you switch from wanting to write books to writing for streaming media? As Kurt Vonnegut once said of writers, “One day we will all be writing for actors.” While researching a novel I came across some information, and I got the idea for the story behind Shanghai Shanghai . After spending some time writing the outline, it became apparent that there was more here than for a novel, further, not to write this for the screen would be a waste of words. I began outlining stories for a three-season TV series as studios and networks such as Netflix, etc. started talking about the need for “Original content.” It was a natural progression. Which are some of the challenges you are fac...

Cooper's King Kong and Walt Disney's Mickey Mouse inspired me to name the world's timelessly biggest monster. How huge is this character? This character is more than an infinity of height. This means Mickey King Kong is well more than a trillion feet tall, at points, and exact sizes were written. Interview with author Yolande Brener

Image
Yolande Brener is a writer living in New York. She finished a new novel, Violet Capers last year and working on the graphic novel version of her previous book, Holy Candy. We have conducted an interview with her. photo:   Maribel Acosta How different are your writing experiences for short stories or film scripts compared to novel writing? In a short story, one can focus on a single event that happens in a short space of time. My two longer books are really a series of short stories that are connected, and in my new book, Violet Capers, I have emphasized the episodic nature of the story. With a novel, the threads have to be consistent and tie together at the end, and the same obsession or desire has to carry it along. I am a big fan of books that happen all in one day like Ulysses and Mrs. Dalloway. The journeying of the imagination is vast compared to that of the body, and this is the area I am most interested in exploring with my writing. Which are your life'...

I’ve always had at least a passing interest in wine, but it was only a few years ago that I began to develop a deeper appreciation for all that goes into making a truly remarkable wine. As I began to learn more and more about the process and all the considerations a winemaker must take into account, I found that I began to experience a greater degree of enjoyment in tasting and, eventually, making wine myself. Obviously, being in such close proximity to a region so well known for winemaking certainly played a fairly significant role in piquing my interest in wine and winemaking. Which is your favourite wine? It is ...

Behrman Communications

Image
Today our guest is Nancy Behrman, a pioneer in the world of beauty and lifestyle brand publicity. Behrman Communications ' philosophy has always been simple: developing strong collaborative and amicable relationships with the media, manufacturers and retailers is at the heart of a successful brand building strategy. We have conducted an interview with Nancy. How did you become a pioneer in the beauty and lifestyle sector? When I founded Behrman Communications in 1985, I felt that there was an obvious lack of creativity and innovation going into PR and brand-building campaigns -- largely due to a prevailing corporate mindset that made for dull and unimaginative strategies. I never specifically set out to become a pioneer in the beauty and lifestyle sector; instinct and intuition played a major role in the development of the agency’s unconventional and imaginative approach to public relations and brand building. What is Behrman Communications' philosophy? From t...

Restaurant San Carlo Osteria Piemonte

Image
Opened in March 2016 and located at 90 Thompson Street, between Prince & Spring streets, San Carlo Osteria Piemonte is the newest gastronomic addition to the Italian culinary scene in the heart of Soho, New York City. We have conducted an interview with the management of the restaurant. What kind of cuisine and ambiance does San Carlo Osteria Piemonte bring? Moreno Cerutti, Managing Director: We named our restaurant San Carlo Osteria Piemonte because we wanted to give a strong emphasis to our territoriality, taking the most famous and monumental square of our Turin, Piazza San Carlo, as our icon. We have brought to New York City the Piedmont’s culture that is reflected in a very simple cuisine and environment: straightforward but genuine and authentic dishes and soft music playing in the background. Also, the restaurant’s furnishings and architecture reveal our region, being extremely minimal but with high-end materials (bronze, faience, beams, contempora...
