Liis Koger - The magic that my abstract art conveys

Image
Liis Koger , born 23.12.1989, is an Estonian painter and poet. Liis received a degree in Painting, Fine Arts from the University Of Tartu (2013). She minored in Theology and was enrolled in Psychology courses. Three poetry books have been written by her (all in Estonian). She started launching a career as a freelance artist during school time. Liis Koger (Photo: Jake Farra) What is the 'magic' that your abstract art conveys? The magic is in the energy. I don't EVER say - that abstract, for example - is something special FOR the invisible; I believe the "magic" is the same whether it is Rembrandt or Rothko! The question, that stays MAGICAL, is, that in my opinion, the MAGIC is INSIDE the painting, and cannot be explained by description, what is ON the painting (that much)... It is really funny because a painting is a really - if not wholly - a visual thing. But being an abstract or a realistic piece does not explain the magic. One cannot just do an abstract piece ...

Painter Joselyn Miller

Image
Joselyn Miller works with acrylic on canvas in a contemporary flat style, utilizing bold color to render her uplifting subjects. Her compositions are playful, often based on humorous themes. Raised in an artistic, modern design-centered family, Joselyn was highly influenced by her father, a noted architect, in pursuit of creative outlets. For several years, she has studied one-on-one with one of her art idols, renowned painter, James Strombotne. Formal education includes studies in drawing and painting at several colleges and universities, a bachelor’s degree in business from the University of Southern California and a fashion design degree from the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising. Several private and corporate collections include Joselyn’s paintings. Joselyn Miller Why do you like to incorporate 'humor' and 'nostalgia' in your works of art? A few years back, I survived two rare, life-threatening illnesses, thanks to a bone marrow transplant from my b...

Interview with painter Ellen Dieter

Image
Ellen Dieter has painted, been an artist, created her whole life. Dieter grew up in Cleveland, Ohio and then moved around from city to city. She lived in Paris for a decade - exploring Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia, eventually settling back in the US, in San Diego, CA. Dieter's art reflects her outer surroundings as well as her inner landscapes. With a constant quest for expression, she tries new ways of painting and taking risk. Ellen's work is constantly growing and evolving. Her organic compositions capture the ephemeral vitality of modern life. Who inspires you to create this 'Women Series" in the first place? How did you begin?  The first female figures I ever drew were when I was young, maybe 8, and would copy the Sunday Funnies. Later, in art school, Life Drawing classes almost always had a woman model for us to draw. Since then I have continued to sit in on life drawing sessions and I gravitate toward the female figure. As a woman, I re...

Abstract portraiture painter Abigail Tessier

Image
Abigail Tessier is a 2020 graduate with a Bachelor’s in Art Studio. After graduation, she moved to Ithaca, NY to seek an artist community and career, but with the current state of our world, her plans have changed slightly. So instead, she's been an essential worker while she continues to sell her art online. She mostly paint portraiture in a style that she describes as fluid, colorful, and abstracted. We have conducted a short interview with her. Swirl Girl (2019) by Abigail Tessier Why did you choose to work on abstract portraiture painting?  I guess that after trying semi-realism for a few years, I got bored of it. In my sophomore year of college, I created a painting inspired by Happy D; we were assigned to pick an artist and imitate their style. I think the objective was to learn how they accomplished the appearance of their painting, but instead I ran with the inspiration and experimented. My style has evolved more since then, but that was a defining moment....

Expressionist painter David Tycho

Image
David Tycho was born in Vancouver and graduated from the University of British Columbia, where he studied painting under renowned Canadian artist Gordon Smith. For the past 30 years, David’s painting has straddled the genres of abstraction and representation, at times more experimental and intuitive and at other times more reflective of his surroundings. His works are inspired by subjects ranging from pristine wilderness areas, to urban sprawl, to the people he encounters along the way. Tycho has exhibited his work in New York, Los Angeles, Seattle, Geneva, Brussels, Zurich, Singapore, Manila, Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver, and his paintings are collected worldwide. Where do you get your inspiration from? Do you prefer more abstract art?  I am very affected and inspired by extreme environments. In recent years these have ranged from the pristine wilderness areas of western North America to the congested urban centres of New York and Tokyo. It’s the in-between or transitiona...

Freelance artist Jolanta Johnsson

Image
Jolanta Johnsson graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, where she specialised in graphics. Since then she has worked as a freelancing artist, and painting and drawing are the techniques that dominate in her work. She creates figurative compositions and landscapes. Through the figurative representations, she seeks to portray existential questions, and she focuses on the reality that she is surrounded with, i.e. the reality of the "modern man" living in an era of multidimensional change. We have conducted an interview with Jolanta. What is art in your own terms? How do you feel when you’re inspired? In my understanding, art is something incomprehensible. From the point of view of practical needs - unnecessary. And yet it is. An artist is a man who feels the irrational need to make art. He doesn't know why. The need to convey on canvas or paper (I will limit myself to visual arts) impressions, thoughts or ideas is so great that the question about the g...

Painter Stephanie Nückel

Image
Painter Stephanie Nückel was born in Göttingen in 1960. She went to Berlin in 1984, completed an art therapy study from 1991 to 1995 and then worked as an art teacher at the Cologne School of Art Therapy / Dependence Berlin. Stephanie Nückel has been working as a freelance artist in Berlin since 1999, where she creates her seductive portraits of women. With her works, she asks whether we have long forgotten, what power and magic women have. The primeval feminine seems at first to have been lost in our world. Women make careers, try to organize and live their motherhood in parallel. Your intuition remains in offline mode. With her own intuition, Stephanie Nückel takes up this topic. Subtly and analytically, she embarks on a world that is far from the mainstream - the world of myths. She dives into cultures and times when goddesses were not denied but honored as life-protecting. The primeval force of the feminine is cyclical. And so it is not surprising that the moon circles in the g...
