Charitable endeavors with Jonah Engler

Image
Jonah Engler never pictured that charitable endeavors would be his life’s work. But the “cause” was instilled upon him early, helping his mom with several projects sponsored by her employer, the United Federation of Teachers (UFT). While attending college, Jonah discovered an innate aptitude to lead, and to build. This powerful combination built the charitable man he is today. His first endeavors were funded by writing competitive grants. Slowly, donations appeared. His goal has always been self-funded charities. However, he tries to avoid turning them into “businesses. He believes in giving his charities a “humble” feel. Charities have specific missions and visions, but at the end of the day, he knows they are just about giving to those who need help the most. Jonah is very outspoken about ‘other’ charities that do not truly support what their missions. What has been the biggest accomplishment in your career? Most would answer this question like, “when I got an...

MMM - More Makes Merry

Image
Our guest today is David Shekleton, from Melbourne Australia. He founded MMM , a site for travellers, bloggers and charities who want to make the world a little more merry, one trip at a time. We have conducted an interview with David. What is MMM and what kind of community website have you developed? MMM stands for MORE MAKES MERRY . Its name is obviously a play on the phrase the ‘more the merrier’. For me, it’s the major conundrum of travel. ‘More’ can be extremely helpful, or it can be as equally hindering. There are times when you want loads of people around - friends, family, and strangers to share your travel experience with. However, often, and now more often, you want less people because it means less pollution, noise, cars, plastic and all the other negative knock-on effects that travel brings with it. With 1.4 billion international trips annually now we’re asking more and more of these great destinations and not finding ways to give back. Yes, travel does imp...

Eric Fulks is from Wisconsin, USA. His website is donating 100% of profit to charity. One of those charities helps bipolar disorder, depression and suicide awareness. He also partners with companies who donate, help give jobs to women in 3rd world countries and also young girls rescued from the sex trade. We have conducted an interview with him. What inspires you into this tie-scarf business and charitable work? I am bipolar and I have struggled with depression and suicide for a long time. Only recently have I found a solution, or set of solutions, to truly help. I have also volunteered my whole life from working with youth at the YMCA and a church to giving out blankets to the homeless on Christmas eve or helping a no kill dog shelter. I met a woman who tied her scarf like a tie and I thought it was ingenious and I love scarves so I thought why not start a blog but then I came across vendors who also donate or help with charity and so I started the process of selling. ...
