Contemporary realist artist Jennifer Chalklen talks about her art

Image
Artist: Jennifer Chalklen ; Image: Viveash Photography Singapore-based, New Zealand born Jennifer Chalklen is a contemporary realist artist who is mostly self-taught. Her works are a journey into whimsy, delicate and beautiful, reflective and poignant. Jennifer developed a strong interest in realistic portraiture during her five years of living in Jakarta, Indonesia. Despite the chaos and abject poverty, Jennifer observed a quiet pulse of connectedness through acts of kindness, cultural nuances and the Islamic religious practices, which acted as an antidote to the disorder of the city, and an identity of togetherness within diversity. Her works display symbolism and imagery which act as a conjoint to invisible concepts that contain reflections of beauty, and act as visual explanations that are relatable across communication barriers. This is what it looks like when grit meets creation… As a self-taught artist, what made you choose the cool contemporary genre to ...

Interview With Artist Billy Ma, The Creative Genius Behind Booda Brand

Image
Billy Ma is a painter, sculptor, designer and illustrator. He was born in Taiwan but raised in Canada. 2009 saw Billy growing restless with his job as an art director in innovation and so he began to flex his artistic skills via digital illustrations during his spare time. With the popularity of the first images on social media and enquiries from interested buyers, Booda Brand - the limited-edition print company - was conceived. Drawing from contemporary themes, Billy seamlessly and naturally combines eastern and western aesthetics into his artwork. Many influences come from spirituality, socio-political issues and a sardonic sense of humour. Billy now stands by a set of principles to guide Booda Brand artwork: • The art must be beautifully crafted. Too often we see artists who can barely draw a stick figure. • The art must have an inspirational idea and/or soul. Do we need another variation on a portrait of Marilyn Monroe? • The printing and the materials must be museum quality...

Image
Janet Chui is a watercolor artist in Singapore who paints mythological, visionary and fantasy subjects. Last year, she created a deck of inspirational cards featuring her artwork and writing, and very recently this was converted into a mobile app. She is now working on artwork for another deck of cards, and this is a Tarot deck featuring angels. We have conducted an interview with Janet. Why did you choose to paint mythological and fantasy subjects? I've loved myths, folk tales and fairy tales for much of my life, and the art I admired most were book illustrations and paintings with flying figures, angels, and fantastical beasts. Not only were the stories engaging (whether they came from the books or I imagined them myself) but I was also captivated by the idea of painting things that were not seen in "normal" reality. There was an innate challenge and attraction in making these things real by painting them. How do you share your painting process via video...

The first book in the series is titled Captain Hawk and her latest release is titled Hawk's Ascension. We have conducted an interview with her. What inspires you the most for the historical fiction series? I have always loved historical fiction . It is what I like to read, and all of my favourite authors are from this genre. I find the fact that we are not much different to our historical counterparts the most inspiring. Hawk’s Ascension is the second in my Hawk’s Legacy series. It is the continuation of Nathaniel Hawk’s life journey. He has bested his enemies and is now able to focus on his wife and his career. Unfortunately, fate has...
