The days of animation being relegated to the prepubescent and tween market is long past. Sony’s Oscar winning Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse has only stoked the fire of interest from fans, critics, and potential investors. The epicenter of the genre is undoubtedly Japan where the viewing demographics cover a wide spectrum. The irony of the rejuvenated grown-ups interest in animation is the bedrock foundation of the genre still lies in youth based storylines. Beyblade Burst is one of the most recent and most popular animated productions of the past three years. Originally airing on the TXN network (TV Tokyo, TV Osaka), it has made its way to international fame in the US, Canada, the UK, Australia, New Zealand, and numerous other countries. Janine Gateland enchants audiences in ‘Turn Off the Lights’

Image
Janine Gateland was a mere seven years old when she knew what she wanted to do for the rest of her life. At the time, a young child in Yorkshire, England, she had just stepped onto a stage for the first time, ready to show off her skills to the many eyes on her. It was in that moment that she fell in love with performing, becoming intoxicated by the adrenaline that came with entertaining an audience. “I loved the energy you got from the audience and being able to perform and effect people. I remember every family Christmas party I would gather everyone around, dress up and put on a dance performance all on my own in our living room. I just loved to perform to people because I could become someone totally different. I was always very shy as a child but once I was on that stage or in front of the camera, I could become someone else,” she said. Despite starting out in theatre, Gateland has made a name for herself in the United Kingdom as a film and television actor. She has c...

Zekun Mao uses editing to create a thrill for audiences

Image
Zekun Mao still remembers the first time she truly noticed film as a form of art, beyond a simple form of entertainment. She was watching Christopher Nolan’s 2000 blockbuster Memento , and she was fascinated by not just the story, but how it was being told. She began to immerse herself in movies, making her realize a passion that she never knew she had. She knew from then on that she was meant to go into filmmaking, and now, as an award-winning editor, she is living her dream. “Whatever style the story requires, I will cut the film in that way. I would describe my style of editing as naturalism. I came from a documentary background. Being natural, or being real, is the most important thing. When I am editing, I like to stick to the style of the footage and stick to the tone of stories. I love showing the story as it should be. If it should be emotional, then I will make sure the way I cut the movie will make audiences feel that particular way,” she said. Becoming an industry...

Animator and Graphic Designer Andrea Mercado turned childhood passion into esteemed career

Image
Ever since she was a child, Andrea Mercado was obsessed with cartoons. Growing up in Lima, Peru, she dreamed that one day she would work in animation, being able to make other kids feel how she felt watching her favorite shows, even though she had no idea at that age how animation worked. When she was twelve, her father bought her the book How to Animate Film Cartoons by Walter Foster, and her life was changed. Mesmerized by what she read, Mercado began trying to make her own animations, first on flip books and then on her old computer. “When I finally finished my first digital animation, I was so amazed! I couldn’t believe I had made characters move! And the process took a long time because animation is like that, but when you’re enjoying something you don’t really feel the passing of time. As I grew older, I started making little animations to make my friends happy, and that made me happy too. Now that I’m an adult I make animations that make myself happy, and thankfully, t...
