Guoqing Fu provides insight and advice on the art of producing

As a producer, Guoqing Fu takes an idea and transforms it into a work of art that he can share with worldwide audiences. It is this notion that drives him, fueled by his creativity. He feels a rush putting together the ideal team to turn a vision into a reality, meeting countless directors, writers, and other filmmakers who share the same passion.

Originally from China, Fu is an internationally sought-after producer. He is known for award-winning films like La Pieta, Gum Gum, Underset, and more. To stay at the top of his game, he focuses on three key aspects of filmmaking, consistently refining his craft. First, the pre-production work of the film, paying attention to details, thinking about uncontrollable factors, preparing and solving problems in advance. Second, in the process of film shooting, he knows the importance of maintaining a serious attitude. The third step is post-production. The film needs to seek the interest of the audience. As a rational producer, he pays attention to the material benefits and mass benefits brought by his works.

“Non-science fiction films need the perfect optical environment while respecting the reality. Science fiction films or artistic films should pay attention to the expression of pictures and the charm of personalized art. I prefer the film styles that the public likes, such as the science fiction films with big scenes and the drama films with delicate emotional expression, but when it comes to the artistic films I like, I prefer the expression of the moral level and the sophisticated ethics. These are important things to keep in mind as a producer,” he described.

Earlier this year, one of Fu’s most recent projects premiered at the Asia and America International Film Festival. His film Over greatly impressed, taking home the Best Dramatic Original Award and Best Directing. It is expected to make its way to more festivals throughout the year, adding more accolades to Fu’s already decorated resume.

“I think the most important thing about the success of a film is the director's attitude to the story. When I see the director's serious attitude, she is willing to take the time and energy to delve into the story, that’s why I think it is a successful film,” he said.

Over is a story about a 23-year old man, Jackson, who came to a big house to replace his Uncle Mike’s job as a steward, who is in his fifties and close to retirement. Soon, Jackson finds out the owner of the house, Zion, is hiding a big secret. It was the story that made Fu want to work on the film, with a bit of black humor and a mixture of irony, while still maintaining an important message.
“I like the idea of the story. Don't judge people by their appearance. In real life, there are many people who judge people by their appearance,” said Fu.

As the Producer of Over, Fu had a great deal of responsibilities to bring the film to the success it has already become. He helped the director find the location, which proved a challenge. The film shot during the night, so the location was very hard to find as many owners don’t allow filming overnight in their house. This also meant Fu had to spend a great deal of time communicating with the neighbors. On top of finding the perfect location, Fu helped the director, Jin Yan, with her script, and helped to build the crew and find the ideal cast.

“I've worked with all the crew members many times before. We've had a good relationship with each other, and we've had a good time in the shooting process,” he said.

Fu’s rigorous working attitude allows him to be an effective leader on whatever project he is working on, and Over was no exception. His team trusts him, which is essential for any film’s success. He knows how to deal with people and can perfectly resolve any small conflicts in different departments and promote work efficiency. Such skills make him an extraordinary producer, and he says for all those looking to pursue a career in producing to appreciate their team.

“Value other people's excellent film work, learn and reflect on their artistic expression, learn from each other. Adhere to independent artistic creation and focus on their own artistic charm. Seeking and finding professional teams, stable cooperation can make artistic creation appear healthier or even break through to another level. Deeply understand the artistic charm of the film, let the film art become an inseparable part of life, in order to sublimate their art appreciation ability and to improve their artistic expression in the film. The most important point is that on the development path of film artistic creation, we should humbly consult the predecessors and boldly, cautiously explore the creation. These are the five greatest pieces of wisdom I could share with future filmmakers,” he advised.
