The idea for the story came after a chance meeting with scientist and author Mark Roman. I’m a beach-dweller on a small island in the Outer Hebrides. A few years ago I found Mark wandering along Doom Beach collecting and cataloguing brightly coloured pebbles. In return for a cup of hot seaweed tea he gave me a copy of a fascinating book he had written speculating about the various rocks that might be found on Mars. We have conducted an interview with her. How do you describe your writing style? Reviewers have described my writing as complex and suspenseful, dark and broody, with complicated and nuanced characters and cinematic pacing. I see my writing style as character driven. When a character has something to say, I listen, whether it’s the middle of the night, on a hike, while swimming, or during a meeting. I’m not apt to write in chapter order, but I do work with a strategy. I begin by writing notes regarding the structure of a scene from beginning to end and then I let these ideas simmer before I begin writing. This process can take days, weeks or even months, depending on the depth of research and intricacies involved. Once I finish writing an entire scene, I go back through the story and figure out w...

How different is producing top-forty hits versus writing an epic-adventure about time travel? Believe it or not, there are several similarities in these seemingly inharmonious endeavors. As Quincy Jones once stated, "A great song isn't written, it's rewritten." The attention to detail and the willingness to take chances is a talent that deserves recognition. I see you have a music soundtrack that accompanies the novel. How do they work in tandem? Well, first let me say that this book is not about music. Yet, the music is...
