Family Heritage | The Art of Mahjong Craft

Image
Karen Cheung is a self-taught illustrator in Hong Kong specializing in cultural themes. ‘Karen Aruba’ is her illustrator name. The name was inspired by the year she spent in Aruba, a Dutch Caribbean island known as ‘One Happy Island’ when she was ten to share art with creativity. Inspired by her grandfather and father with the family’s mahjong’ manufacturing factory in Hong Kong from 1963 to 2009, Karen re-designs a series of Mahjong creative artwork in collaboration with her father, craftsman Ricky Cheung, to preserve this dying art form. ‘A Mahjong Story’, is an intimate tale intricately linked with Hong Kong art and culture, showcasing traditional mahjong craftsmanship integrated with artistry.  With a joint-effort of two generations, the ‘Art of Mahjong Craft’ spirit was kept alive with a number of ventures. This year is its 5th anniversary of the brand, Karen Aruba Art, by having the new art studio setup - the latest effort to revive this old tradition with a modern twist....

I am a Superhero - interview with author Shanna Star

Image
Shanna Star has been known to be a speaker of truth by those who know her personally. It wasn't until 6.28.18 that Shanna realized her purpose on this earth was to speak her truths in the form of delivering messages that others have not yet found the courage or the words to deliver. The knowledge that Shanna possesses does not come from other books, but rather from our direct source of creation, the universe / God. Why did you write the book "I am a Superhero" and what or who inspires you to write it? Everything I do is intuitively guided, so I didn't have a plan to write this book. One day while stretching I got the idea that I should write a story about the ways I felt so different as a child, and the journey through trying to accept everything taught to us as 'normal', and eventually coming to realize that I'm different for a very important reason. I wanted children to know that they aren't alone in these thoughts, and i wanted adults to also know t...

Interview with experimental artist Otto Laske

Image
Otto Laske is a visual artist, composer, and published poet writing in English and German. His visual art is entirely digital; his concert music comprises both instrumental and electronic works. Given that his compositional career of 45 years preceded his turn to visual art (in his seventies), his work shows strong influences of music-compositional thinking in that it emphasizes energy flow, variations of density, conflict resolution, and contrasts in terms of color, line, and stroke.  Otto’s visual art developed out of animations comprising images, music, and his own poetry read aloud. He initially exhibited specially selected animation stills as paintings. As time went on, he increasingly embraced Klee’s notion of Aufzucht der Mittel (nurturance of the tools of the craft) as the core of art making. As a result, his primary concern became the aliveness of the pictorial space. For him, this esthetics entails freeing the elements of painting from subservience to representational goa...
