KARLEE SQUIRES IS A MODERN DAY CLASSIC IN “THE MUSIC MAN”

Image
Karlee Squires is a time traveler. It might be more relatable to say that she is the type of triple threat entertainer that was more prominent in the early days of Hollywood but the essence of the statement is true. As an actor/dancer/singer she contrasts a world of entertainers that (for the majority) wish to specialize in one field. Action star, dancer, singer…these are labels which allow the public to quickly distinguish what they think they prefer. Squires has much more in common with the Hollywood stars of the early last century and those of modern Broadway than any genre specific individual you might be more familiar with. Don’t hold onto that idea too long though; Karlee is finding herself cast in a number of international productions. Her appearances these days are eclectic and it’s her contention that her early days in live theater are what prepared her for these. One of the most beloved and classic of these is Meredith Wilson’s “The Music Man” which first made its mark on Br...

THE DUAL COMPOSTIONS OF EIKO JIN FOR MY SWEET PRINCE

Image
We’ve all had the experience in which we here a police siren, the rumble of a train, the roar of an airplane and we know what is coming based on the sound that precedes it. The same can be said for the music of a film. Quite often when one watches the trailer for a film you understand what type of film it will be within the first few seconds because of the music, sometimes more so than the visuals. Many filmmakers use this nonverbal cue to communicate to the audience what they can expect in the story. The filmmakers who created My Sweet Prince wanted composer Eiko Jin to do the inverse of this. They had a major twist in their storyline and wanted Jin to help them deceive, in a benevolent manner, the audience. Audiences are clever and there are so many films these days that director Sijia Zhao felt Eiko’s mastery of mood and melody would enable the prestidigitation which was the aim of the production. Not only was this method successful but it resulted in critical and public acclaim. ...

The Light

Image
Take the sense of history and faith out of the original Christmas story and you are left with an incredibly dramatic and difficult situation, in other words…a great opportunity for a gripping tale. The City Playhouse production “The Light” presented at the Al Green Theater performed this story. For those who remove the spiritual facet of this situation it becomes a story of society and how outcast are treated. To those who subscribe to the religious beliefs it contains, the play gives a new emotional perspective to an already familiar part of their core events. Regardless of the ideals you hold (or do not) “The Light” offers this famous story in a way that you have never seen before. The introduction of new characters (not found in scripture) is highlighted by the incredible performance of Canada’s Ava Cummings. The role of mother-in-law carries its own preconceived characteristics; Cummings presents the role in one of the most famous and precarious of situations in history. Appearing...
