Evan Parsons: Instagram and the Film Industry

Image
Evan Parsons is probably not what you think of when imagining a young photographer. It’s likely you’re imagining someone who utilizes the newest apps with stylized filters to take photos of sensational current trending people and subjects; this is the very inverse of Evan’s work. His popularity on Instagram belies the preconception of what both photographer and fans pay attention to. The striking aspect of this Calgary born lensman’s creations is that his photos possesses an intangible depth of story that is rarely seen these days amidst the proliferation of images online. It’s likely that this is the result of his accidental mastery. Parsons concedes that in his frequent moments of unemployment during his earlier days, he traversed the city with his girlfriend’s Nikon and void of any goal other than investigating whatever captured his attention. Through this organic process, Evan cultivated an original style he honed during his days living and working in Vancouver. It wasn’t long bef...

Producer Arlene McGann and “The Surprise”, Apple’s Emotional Holiday Gift

Image
As consumers become more resistant to overt advertising and marketing, savvy companies are turning to creative professionals more focused on telling a story that appeals emotionally rather than one based on prestige. It seems that what continually resonates with the public are messages with depth, a strong contrast to previous decades with an appeal that espoused the benefits of being “cool.” There’s perhaps no better example of this that the redirect of Apple’s marketing of the iPad with commercials like “The Surprise.” Producer Arlene McGann oversaw this heartfelt mini-film and its subsequent shorter commercial version with director Mark Molloy. “The Surprise” is presented by Smuggler, the production company responsible for the feature film Sing Street, Once The Musical , and cinematic ads like Heineken’s “Daniel Craig Vs. James Bond”, “Superstar” with Jonah Hill for Adidas, and Harley Davidson’s “Breathe.” McGann is a frequent collaborator with Molloy (nominated for the DGA “Outsta...

Living in a busy area, he was naturally driven to street photography, with the goal of chronicling quotidian life and human nature.  In the series "Quotidian life", he illustrates the daily life of its residents, rain or shine. He considers that through candid images, sometimes amusing or even touching, street photography is the ideal media for seizing precious slices of everyday life. We have conducted an interview with Daniel. What do you see in the moments that had inspired you to create your series "Quotidian life"? First and foremost, my work is one of a street photographer. From this field work, in a post production stage, I’m emphasizing the mood I was in and add atmosphere, dramatizing my imagery, thus challenging the strict rules of street photography which may displease some purists. As some people just can't bel...

Producer Cindy Wu: a Powerful Force Behind God’s Gracie

Image
God’s Gracie is the type of film that immediately envelopes the viewer. The interaction of such strong willed and well-meaning individuals depicted in the story is intriguing even if you don’t share any of their different views. What you won’t find yourself thinking about while watching the story unfold is how challenging it was to manifest a tale like this, which is exactly what the filmmakers behind this production intended. Producer Cindy Wu was much more concerned with strategizing budgetary and work schedule constraints than the religious or social convictions that the characters in this film deal with. An Official Selection of 2019 Outfest Los Angeles and a recipient of awards from Film Festivals like the Independent Short Awards and the Los Angeles Brazilian Film Festival, God’s Gracie confirmed that there is most certainly an enthusiastic audience for the subject matter of religion in a comedy/drama. The burgeoning genre owes its increasing popularity to productions like this...
