How did you get started in the education industry?

After graduating from Miami University with a BSc in Education in 1998, I got my first job working in Columbus City Schools teaching fifth-grade students. During those early days, I was also tasked with communicating and organizing career day activities and educational programs.

What has been the biggest accomplishment in your career?

I was privileged to head Yorktown Middle School in Columbus Ohio from 2013 to 2017. This is the highest school administrative position I have held. I did a lot to implement programs aimed at improving student’s core academics and performance. I also played an important role in the inauguration of President Obama’s My Brother’s Keeper district pilot program.

Much earlier in 2003, I was invited as guest speaker at the Annual Football Clinic at University of Minnesota.

In 2016, I also presented at the Ohio School Improvement Conference.

Is educating your biggest passion?

I am extremely pleased to see students grow in their school years and later graduate high school and many go on to college to then become responsible members of society, serving their communities in various capacities. It is my passion to help them reach their aspirations.

What motivates you?

Waking up every morning knowing I am going to make a difference in the lives of people.

How do you stay ahead of the competition?

Being an effective teacher and administrator. I prefer a top-down management style, where ideas are conceptualized at the higher level is then passed down for implementation by respective team leaders. I believe that collaboration with all stakeholders is important for buy-in and ensuring that constituents support ideas. For best practices and results, it really helps to cultivate a culture of sharing among members.

What are some of your favorite tools and resources for your work?

With the advances in technology, a lot is happening in the education front. Students can now learn and read digital textbooks, take online courses and listen to education podcasts. I am a big fan of Survey Monkey and Slideboom education tools. Survey Monkey is a powerful survey tool that offers educators the opportunity to collect and organize information. Slideboom is a synergistic tool that allows educators to store and share presentations with other teachers.

What advice do you have for others who want to enter your sector?

The education sector is both demanding and fulfilling. Besides personal fulfillment, educators also enjoy exposure to multiple perspectives and growth opportunities. Figures obtained from the Bureau of Labor Statistics indicate that as many as 150,000 teaching jobs will be made available in a span of 10 years between 2015 and 2025. The sheer numbers indicate the teaching opportunities available for aspiring students and graduates.
