Hubert Kang talks authentic and emotional photography and doing what he loves every

Image
When Hubert Kang takes a photograph, he is always looking for moments and layers in an environment to build a visually rich image. He doesn’t ask for models to pose, he gives them a story and lets them act naturally. In that process, he captures something that’s believable and relatable, but yet at the same time useful to his client. His style is authentic and emotional, a hybrid of commercial and documentary photography; there will be imperfections and surprises, but in a good way. This in demand photographer has had quite an esteemed career. From travelling the world with Fairmont hotels to travelling Canada for Globe and Mail , millions have seen and appreciated his work. He is known for his ability to tell a story with a single image, and popular companies seek him out to help rebrand their advertising image, such as Metropolis at Metrotown Mall, Vancouver’s largest shopping center, and Fairmont Royal York, one of the nation’s most prolific hotels. “It’s easy for every...

William Bronchick , a successful young caterer based in Denver, Colorado, grew up working in his family barbecue restaurant in Texas. With his family’s full support, he attended the Culinary Institute of America in San Antonio. While his original background is in classic American and Texas barbecue fare, William Bronchick quickly branched out to other world cuisines. Bronchick is equally likely to dine in a five-star restaurant as to visit a small, family-run establis...

To Dream with Brooke Chamberlain

Image
Too few of us dare to manifest our dreams. It’s a requirement for an actor to be a dreamer, both in practice and in theory. Australian actress Brooke Chamberlain is one of those few in the world who understood her dreams and followed the course through to manifest them. Growing up in Alstonville (NSW, Australia), a little country town merely twenty minutes from Byron Bay, Brooke followed her brothers and attempted to do whatever they did. This rejection of any limitations is what likely led to her self-confidence. When her talent and said confidence landed her on the set of Lionsgate’s Daybreakers (starring Ethan Hawke, Sam Neil, Willam Defoe, and Claudia Karvan) it was apparent to her and everyone around her that this was her calling. Subsequent appearances in blockbusters like Walt Disney Pictures Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales starring Johnny Depp and Javier Bardem vetted this fact. Chamberlain’s career thus far has been the eclectic life of an actress with diff...

Paradise Found – An Interview With Photographer Fred Stichnoth

Image
Growing up, Fred Stichnoth was always drawn to adventure movies set in tropical locations. “I love ancient themes, from Egypt to Indonesia. I’ve spent a long time travelling around the world, being drawn to what is considered taboo,” he says. So, it was a dream come true when he located from his native Germany to the Indonesian Island of Bali. From here he has been able to explore some of the remotest areas in the East Indies and the tribes that call these places home. A home that is fast disappearing, along with their customs, legends, ceremony and regalia. When the world is at your feet, turning your back on it is a big call. But most of us are not Fred Stichnoth. The German-born, Bali-based photographer relinquished life as a celebrity and fashion photographer in the late nineties, where he was poised for popularity, in order to decamp to the East Indies and collect shells. It’s a move that has yielded a distinctive body of work. Stichnoth’s portraiture bears the hallma...

Anna and Dan

Image
Art is not always about the abundance of expression. Sometimes it is about being straightforward and the beauty in the simplicity. Pablo Picasso’s “Dove of Peace”, “Blackbird” by The Beatles, there are numerous examples in varied mediums of art which exhibit the power and effectiveness of restraint coupled with sincere emotion. Production designer Yuntong Peng utilized this approach in her work on the film Anna and Dan . What is so striking about Peng’s work on this film is how her minimalistic approach perfectly complements the emotional tone of the two main characters. Though Yuntong has contributed her talent to productions ranging from award-winning thrillers like The Girl in the Garage to national news channels such as Changsha News, and others, this heart-wrenching tale of two wounded people seems to be where the understated side of her work shines most brightly. Awards from WorldFest-Houston International Film and Video Festival, Festigious Los Angeles, Hollywood International...

The Cinematic Well Fargo Western

Image
When Wells Fargo found itself in the midst of a scandal, it performed a “mea culpa” via commercial. In a series of ads, it both acknowledged the need to change and once again earn the public’s trust as well as reminded us of the good it had once done. Connection with the people means speaking to them directly. These spots included archival footage as well as a number of period pieces with a diverse set of individuals of different backgrounds. People were the key element in these ads and Amanda Curtis was the production talent coordinator for it. Cinematic is the only word appropriate to describe these productions which show the American public from the westward expansion up to present day and the relationship that has existed with Wells Fargo. The intention was to tell a story which communicates the long history of Wells Fargo working as a benevolent contributor to the growth of America, spanning numerous decades. This lofty goal required a truly grand approach. To facilitate ...

A Scream That’s Trapped Inside

Image
It shouldn’t come as a surprise to fans of the genre that horror films are big business; one which is increasing every year. Compare the US box office returns for horror films of the 70’s (slightly exceeding $200 million) to last year’s record breaking $733 million in ticket sales (the biggest year in film history) for Horror films and it’s obvious that audiences love these productions. The storylines range from classics like Stephen King’s IT to a new subgenre (psycho-social horror) in Get Out. With a fanbase that hungers for film of this type, the question posed is how creative filmmakers can be in order to hold the interest of a receptive audience. Producer Huidi Sun led the team which created one of 2017’s most praised and awarded horror shorts, A Scream That’s Trapped Inside . The immense success and attention of this film has vetted the film community’s awareness that the increasing popularity of short format films (prominent at festivals and via streaming services) is opening u...

Making TV Hits with Laura Elwood

Image
“If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” While that statement gives respect to the fine work done in the past, it definitely doesn’t translate when it comes to entertainment. Whether it’s the type of film (or actually, lack of film) being used, the special FX, or even the vernacular of the day, audiences will not be engaged by continual recreation of the same ideas using the same tools. Producer Laura Elwood knows this better than most. As something of a fixer in regards to updating television panel shows for the present day viewer, Laura has been enlisted numerous times to bring a fresh approach. A string of success stories that include long running British programs like Your Face or Mine and 8 Out of 10 Cats have resulted in a greatly respected resume for this producer and a full work schedule. It’s the golden handcuffs of success for a producer like Elwood who finds herself constantly at work because she tuned into the public’s frequency, no pun intended. Panel shows are the mo...

The brightness was dazzling, blinding. “When I woke up to the normal world full of colour, I yearned to see only one colour again, and its unique palette undiluted by surrounding elements.
