Interview with jazz vocalist Fiona Ross

Image
Fiona Ross is a Jazz vocalist, pianist, composer and music producer based in London. Her new album, 'Black, White and a Little Bit of Grey', explores the story of a husband, a wife, and a mistress: a web of emotions, of desires, of regrets, of ecstasy. We have conducted an interview with Fiona. photo credit: Alexander Barnes-Ross In your new album, 'Black, White and a Little Bit of Grey', which particular track is one of your personal favorite?  I don’t have any personal favourite’s I’m afraid, they all mean something different to me in different ways. So ‘Busy…..Always Busy’ and ‘Touch Me, You Make Me Feel So’ for example, are really fun to sing and have an easy groove to go along with so I like performing those without having to get too deeply emotionally involved. I think ‘The Evidence Suggests’ is the hardest one to sing, as vocally as it is quite challenging with the range of notes I have to hit and it is a song that shows a wide range of emotions. The...

EMBRACING WHAT IT FEELS LIKE TO BE HATED…ON SCREEN

Image
Canadian actor PJ Johal is an affable and charming person. It’s disturbing to watch him as Farid Singh in “The Guard.” It’s almost like seeing someone’s evil twin. Statements like this during an interview cause Johal to smile, which is disconcerting in its own way due to his portrayal of Singh. The duplicitous character in this Canadian drama series is someone whom most viewers would find despicable, which again makes the actor smile. Being so pleasant in his personal life and so menacing on screen means that he is doing his job properly.  An actor must believe that the evil intentions of their character are based in as much truth and reality as the inclination in helping or saving someone. The difference is that one is insane but the character only judges logical actions/reasoning within the given circumstances of the character’s life and environment. “The Guard” is a Canadian television production about the heroic men and women of the Canadian Coast Guard…and heroes need a villain. ...

ALWAYS IN STYLE WITH BROOKE CHAMBERLAIN

Image
Why do we love fashion so much? Whether it’s a couture outfit or our favorite pair of worn jeans, it all counts as fashion. For most people, it’s because what we wear helps us to cultivate a certain emotion and/or sense of confidence. While contrarians will discount the fashion community and industry as superficial, most of the world comprehends that fashion is a tool which allows them to have a sense of control in their lives. Australian Brooke Chamberlain is a successful and lauded actress who has appeared in a host of award-winning and publicly embraced films but she’s also a lover of fashion. When the creators of the series Fashion News Live wanted a host for some of the most important industry events of the year, they selected Chamberlain to assume this position. An actor’s job it to get in touch with their own connection to something and then display this to the viewer; who better than a fashion fan who is a respected and talented actress? As host of the Amazon Prime streaming ...

Tony T. Williams in South Korea

Image
Tonight our guest is Tony T. Williams from Shreveport, Louisiana again. He just arrived back from Seoul, Korea. Tony is very interested and active in the community and loves politics and community service organizations. How long were you in Korea and what is your impression? I spent over 9 years I South Korea (2002-08 & 2014-18). I really enjoyed the culture. The country is rich with history and tradition and boast delicious unique foods. Technology surpasses that of the US and prices are very competitive. The Korean people appreciate life and it’s pleasures. This is seen by countless public parts and free museums. Which are the 3 most interesting observations you have made there? Of the 3 most interesting observations would be family structure, pride and political history. Family structure is very traditional and centered on men. Most families trace ancestry back hundreds of generations with little data on females. Pride is huge in Korea. It is not uncommon to hear...

THE UNASSUMING SALLY KINGSFORD IN SUMMER HEIGHTS HIGH

Image
The ABC (Australian Broadcasting Network, not the US American Broadcast Company) series “Summer Heights High” is one of the most successful comedies in the country’s history. It’s funny in an uncomfortable way, or perhaps uncomfortable in a funny way; regardless, Sally Kingsford is happy about her inclusion in the cast as the overly nice and eager Ashley. The tone of the show presents the life of high schoolers with the ridiculousness, and sometimes self-centred opportunism which they can possess. The storyline resonated with Australian and worldwide viewers. “Summer Heights High” was nominated for four Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts Awards, Australia’s most prestigious screen awards (the Australian equivalent to the Academy Awards - winning for Best Television Series and Best Performance in a Television Series), won two Logie awards (for Most Outstanding Comedy Program and Most Popular Actor), and broke Australian DVD records as the biggest selling Australian TV ser...

THE PROOF IS IN THE MUSIC VIDEO: SOLORZANO’S “MAL DE AMORES”

Image
It’s a scary thing to focus your life on a career, finish your studies, and then enter the professional world. When you’re involved in the creative arts it’s perhaps even more intimidating as there is no direct path to success and even at the highest levels of the field there is no security. Many artists make the joke that even after their greatest creations they are unemployed until their next success…which of course finds them immediately unemployed again. When cinematographer Jose Andres Solorzano finished his tutelage at the prestigious AFI in Los Angeles he found himself quickly on the set of famed singer Jaycob Duque’s latest music video “ Mal de Amores ” as DP for noted director Harold Ortiz. This video became a massive success online and was seen as reinvigorating to Duque’s career. Several factors contributed to the exceptional results of this shoot, not the least of which was the enthusiasm Solorzano contributed as a means of exhibiting his abilities and contributions on thi...
