Our guest today is Millie Leung from Hong Kong. She is an Entrepreneur, Bestselling Author and International Speaker. Mom of 2 young daughters. We have conducted an interview with her about her entrepreneurial story.
What is your background?
Today, I am an Entrepreneur, Bestselling Author and International Speaker. I am also a Wife and the Mother of two beautiful little girls.
My passions are in Entrepreneurship, Financial Education and Women Empowerment. And I am on an unshakable mission to help people start their own business, escape the rat race and live a life they truly love!
I absolutely LOVE my life!
But it wasn’t always this way…
I was born in Hong Kong. I grew up following the ’traditional path of success’ – ’go to school, get good grades, get a good job, work hard at the job and save money.’
Growing up, with sheer hard work, I became a straight A student, top of class and had my university fully paid for by scholarships. I went on to graduating with my Bachelor and Master degrees in Engineering in Canada.
After graduation, I worked a few years in Engineering and then landed a job at a Multi-National Corporation in Hong Kong. I started as a Trainee and worked 60-80 hours a week at my job.
Within a few years, I worked my way up to a Senior position within the 54,000-employee company. I was transferred to the USA to help look after the company’s regional branch in Seattle, WA. I was paid well. Unfortunately, with the increase in responsibilities, I found myself working long hours and traveling on the road for business trips months out of the year.
I continued to work there for almost 8 years. Although I found satisfaction in my job, I was burned out, stressed out, and had little time for my family and friends. I was longing to have more meaning in life.
Why did you start an online travel business?
Let me ask you this - ’Have you wondered if there is more to life? That there is something BIG out there waiting for you or you have something burning inside of you to inspire and make an impact?’
Well, that was me - back in Year 2009 while I sat at my desk as a Senior Merchandising Manager in Seattle, Washington, USA.
As an outsider looking in, my life looked pretty good. Good job, good income, nice apartment, nice car but I was feeling lost inside.
I wanted to have more fun, freedom and fulfillment. I wanted to be able to travel the World, to have more time with my children, to create amazing memories, to be able to work anywhere I want with just a laptop/a phone and an internet connection. I want to make a bigger difference and to have a way to inspire and impact others. I wanted to have more than just a normal ’job’ for the next 40 years.
So… I started searching…
Please tell us your entrepreneurial story. How did you start on your online travel business?
In Year 2009, my husband and I were living in the USA, we got hit pretty bad by the economic crisis and lost a lot of our savings. And it is funny how timing works, because a year later, our first daughter Angeline was born. As you can imagine, financially we were tight, stress level was high and things were tough.
In Year 2011, my husband, who was an architect at the time, received an opportunity to work in Singapore. He decided to take the job offer. Within weeks, with just our baby girl and a few luggages in our hands, we moved across the globe to Singapore for a brand new start in life.
Within 2 weeks of moving to Singapore, I stumbled across an idea in the Travel industry. With little money, a baby girl to take care of, no prior business experience, no experience in the travel industry, and not knowing anyone in Singapore, I started my business.
The beginning was tough… People didn’t believe in me as a first time entrepreneur. I was getting rejections left and right, people were telling me I was crazy, I made lots of mistakes, but I kept learning, kept trying and kept going.
26 months later, I made it! My business expanded internationally in November 2013 and I have built our monthly residual passive income substantially from my business – and my family and I became financially free!
How is your new life like?
Today, life is a whole lot different! In just 5 years, I gave birth to my 2nd child, my business has expanded internationally, generating an 8 figure USD revenue annually, we are now financially free, my architect husband is retired, we have been on more than 50 vacations in 5 years, met tons of amazing positive friends, spoke on international stages around the World ranging from a few hundred to more than 10,000+ people, published an international bestselling book and donated 2 schools in Guatemala.
My passions are in Entrepreneurship, Financial Education and Women Empowerment. I want to pay it forward because someone has helped me when I first got started. I am on a mission to help people start their own business, escape the rat race and live a life they truly love.
