Tonight our guest is Amiya Powell, a native New Yorker, the author of The Rabbit Hole: An Erotic Tale. Amiya is fascinated by the subject of human duality, and all things occult, bizarre and fringe, crafting dark stories with twisted plots and flawed heroes. She longs to make your heart race and your palms sweat and your stomach flutter. She wants you to jump, eyes closed and arms outstretched into the Great Unknown, and perhaps meet her there for coffee. We have conducted an interview with her.
Is this your first full length novel?
No. A few years ago there was a little gem called Redneck Jesus, about a group of Scientists who use a DNA scraping from the Shroud of Turin to clone Jesus Christ. Instead of the peaceful Messiah from the bible, they get a foul-mouthed hothead, who loves fighting, motorcycles, cheap booze and cheaper women. I thought it was hilarious and ahead of its time, but no one would touch it with a ten foot pole. It was controversial, to say the least.
What exactly fascinates you on the subject of human duality?
That it forces us to question the nature of our true selves. Everyone’s behavior is shaped to some degree by rules, social expectations, and fear of retribution. We are different people when there isn’t an audience to contend with. So, which version is the ‘real’ us? Who would we be if there were no consequences?
How would you describe "The Rabbit Hole: An Erotic Tale"?
A strange and wild ride which blends mystery, science fiction, and erotica into a modern reimagining of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. The book explores themes of identity and existentialism through the lens of sexuality and relationships.
Can you tell us about some of your real-life inspiration for the book?
It is no secret that the United States Government has been involved in grossly unethical experimentation on its own people. Extreme radiation exposure, Agent Orange injections, viral transmissions, and surgical torture are just a few abuses inflicted on unwitting test subjects. These are not the fanatical conspiracy theories of crazy mountain men, but documented instances which have since become public knowledge.
If you could have a romp with one of your characters, who would it be?
Definitely Ms. YiYi Cash. She is sex in the flesh. I typically like to take the lead in the bedroom, but I’d let her own me.
What is the 'Great Unknown'?
A place where anything can happen.
