Our family is definitely a multilingual family. My wife is Singaporean. Singapore itself is a very multicultural place with four different official languages. Chinese, English, Malay and Tamil. My wife's mother tongue is the Teochew dialect of Chinese but she could speak Mandarin, Hokkien and Cantonese too. Beside this, she speaks fluent English. Since she has been living in Hungary for 6 years she mastered this language on a basic level too.

My mother tongue is Hungarian. When I was 9 years old, I started to learn German and at the age of 26, I decided to learn English too. Without learning languages, our family wouldn't even exist and I really hope that our new born baby will have a bright future mastering English, Chinese and Hungarian from her parents :)

So for us, the importance to learn languages is obvious. But my experience is that learning is much easier if its fun, if you have a concrete motivation and you have continuous opportunity to practice it. The pure academic venture is always boring and seem to be hopeless for many. One of the best opportunity is to learn in the country where people speak the languages that you want to master.
